Flying Start began in June 2010 with the aim of raising £6million by the end of 2013 and as a result of the generosity of both our customers and colleagues we exceeded our target, raising in excess of £6.75million by December 2013.
What’s it all about?
Flying Start is our global charity partnership, British Airways and Comic Relief UK. The aim is to raise money to help children living incredibly tough lives in the UK and around the world. Every child deserves a Flying Start and all money raised through will go to children’s projects in the cities where we fly.
The projects focus on giving children and their families a helping hand rather than a handout to help create lasting change. Flying Start is helping to give street children access to education, giving young carers a break from looking after sick family members and vaccinating babies and children against deadly viruses.
Comic Relief are experts in tackling the issues at the heart of world poverty, while we at BA are well known for our involvement in communities around the world. That’s why this unique partnership is such a winning combination, with the power to transform lives at a local level, on a global scale.
Colleagues from across BA can get involved with the fun and help raise money for Flying Start. Funraisers, our internal champions, play a crucial role in helping our partnership take off
How the money is spent
All donations made to Flying Start will go directly to help transform children’s lives. This money will help to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of children living in the UK and in some of the poorest countries across the world.
We want to help create lasting change by giving children and their families the chance to start supporting themselves. We want to make sure that children have a chance to enjoy their childhood, whether that’s by giving them a break from caring for sick family members, supporting their education or helping children living on city streets to break free from poverty.
Where is the money spent?
Comic Relief has funded projects in more than 67 countries around the world including the UK, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Here are some examples of how money raised by Flying Start could make a difference,
- Just £7 could provide a week’s worth of meals for an extremely poor working child in India.
- £10 could pay for an hour of much-needed counselling for a street child in Brazil who has experienced violence and exploitation.
- £50 could buy a sewing machine for a woman living in extreme poverty in Uganda. The machine gives her the opportunity to earn an income so that she can feed her family.
- £40 could enable a young person in the UK who is caring for a sick relative to take a much-needed break from their adult duties and have a day out with other young people in similar situations.
- £1 could give a child in Kenya five exercise books which will last a whole term at school.

A partnership with Comic Relief
It was launched in 1985 from a refugee camp in Sudan, live on the BBC. Ever since then, it has been working to help poor and disadvantaged people turn their lives around.
Comic Relief UK is best known for organising two major fundraising campaigns which take place on alternate years in the UK – Red Nose Day and Sport Relief – famous for raising money for charity through entertainment and fun events. It’s thanks to the incredible generosity of its supporters that over £700 million has been raised so far to support projects across the world – day in, day out, all year round.
